Congratulations...

  • ...to the eight third- and fourth-year (Game & Sim Programming and Game & Sim Multi-User Programming) programming students competed in a computer hacking competition called picoCTF. Toaster Wars is a collaboration of the Plaid Parliament of Pwning (PPP) of Cylab and Osiris of the Entertainment Technology Center. Both teams are student-run and based at Carnegie Mellon University. Sponsorship was provided by the NSA. The students involved in the competition were: Shane Brohan, Kyle Dabney, Aaron Dettra, Brian Dunn, Scott Mosher, Tim Schoenleber, Katrina Spradlin, and Nathan Winn. This year’s game was called “Toaster Wars.” The premise was: “When a robot from space crash lands in your backyard it's up to your hacking skills to fix him and uncover the secret he carries...” The team comprised of Dabney, Dunn, Mosher, and Spradlin earned a total of 2,310 points out of a possible 5,485 points. Their work earned them 192nd place from a hefty 2,000+ teams competing nationwide!
  • …to the following students whose art work has been selected to be displayed in the College Board Regional Office in Atlanta: Alexandra Coxey (Black and White Landscape); Anastasia Gamble (Fight or Flight); Emily Gessell (Raspberries); Robert Hughes (Cliff); Sydney McNamee (Hope); Alexis Wright (Lights).
  • …to the 5 regional track qualifiers who will be going to regionals. They are James Clark—1st in the district in the 100m, 2nd in the district in the 200m; Payton Rajotte—4th in the district in the 3200m; Kelsey Warren—2nd in the district in the 300m hurdles; Shar’Quayla Baker—3rd in the district in the 300m hurdles; Emily Nolen—3rd in the district in the 800m.
  • ...to the following students who will be the emcees for Honors Night this May:  Kimberlee Sache, Danielle Gellermann, Lindsey Wofford, Brittany Wolford.  Megan Evans is an alternate.
  • ...to Jeanne Heifner who was honored at the HOSA State Convention as the 2012-13 HOSA Advisor of the Year.
  • ...to the 10 HOSA students who placed in the top five places in the state.
  • ...to the Engineering Academy students who placed first out of 20 teams at the Seaperch Underwater Robotic Competition at Embry Riddle. The team earned an invitation to the national competition in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. Dennis Humphrey is the sponsor of this program.
  • ...to the drama students who garnered three "Superior" ratings at the state competition in costume design and duet acting.
  • …to following students for receiving “Superior” ratings at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival West Port High School: Hannah Barlow (clarinet solo); Zachariah Guilbert, Constance Darrisaw, Brieanne Pimental, and Joseph Jacono (saxophone quartet); Brooke Hiers (baton solo); Tori Brown (baton solo); Kimberly Scherder (baton solo); Kimberly Scherder (rifle solo); Cassie Barnette, Savannah Gragg, Amanda Hoover, Nikita McBride, Cheyenne Metts, Ashley Palmer, Raven Petersen, Tyquan Puckrein, Kimberly Scherder, and Marissa West (guard ensemble). The following students received  “Superior with Distinction” ratings which means they played their music from memory: Andrez Garcia (snare drum solo); Justin Peters (trombone solo); The following students received “Excellent” ratings: Hannah Barlow (tenor saxophone solo); Savannah Gragg (flag solo); Cassie Barnette (flag solo); Tori Brown, Brooke Hiers, Cheyenne Metts, and Kimberly Scherder (baton ensemble).
  • …to the four seniors who received The Daytona Beach News-Journal’s Medallion of Excellence award at a banquet at the News-Journal Center in Daytona Beach.   This prestigious award goes to high school seniors with outstanding records of academic achievement, school activities, leadership and community service.  The winners are Taylor Duguay, Emily Gansert, Kara Mosher and Cayci Reigert. 
  • …to the Showdolls for an outstanding showing at competition. The officers won super sweepstakes, technique and choreography awards for all 3 routines and overall high point for officer lines. The varsity team won super sweepstakes as well, and received technique and choreography awards for all 3 routines and high point in pom and kick. The junior varsity team received sweepstakes awards for military and pom and high point in their prop routine.
  • …the following FFA students who competed at the state fair: Sara Knollinger finished 4th in Dairy winning a cash prize; Brittany Wolford finished 4th in Sheep winning a cash prize; Danielle Gellermann finished 2nd in Goat Judging and finished 2nd overall in the finals for Goats with her scores earning a cash prize in addition to her animal ribbons. She also finished 2nd in Dairy winning another cash prize. Brittany Wolford won showmanship for sheep and a silver belt buckle. Her breeder lamb also took Reserve Grand Champion in sheep show.  These three students also competed in the Champion of Champions competition where Danielle Gellermann finished first overall in the state.
  • …to Devon Robinson, who earned first place in the 2013 Black History Month Educators in Excellence Award Essay Contest. Devon’s essay entitled “America, A Symbol of Hope”, won him a four year college scholarship.
  • …to Will Clark, whose artwork, “Greek Vessel” was selected for display at this year’s national exhibition, held in conjunction with the annual international conference of NCECA, The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, in Houston, TX.  There were over a thousand national entries with over 700 of them from juniors and seniors.

  • …to the 48 State Qualifiers from the HOSA Regional Competition.  All 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners qualify for State level competition.  All Health Care Issues winners qualify for States.

  • ...to Will Clark, who won the "Dorothy Johnson Award for Creative Vision" at the Advanced Placement/Honors Art Exhibit at the ArtHaus Gallery. This award is a  tribute to Mother Art, whose vision as Volusia County Art Supervisor, set the stage for all that has followed in the Visual Arts.

  • ...to the following art students whose art work were award winners at the Florida Agriculture 500 Years in the Making Youth Fin Arts Competition. Reid Risner was the Best In Show winner with "The Fruit of Florida's Labour." Finalists include Beverly DeMarco, Elena DeMarco, Hali Howard and Lindsay Narbeth. Award winners include Ana Gamble, Robert Hughes, Veronica Hughes, Alyssa Hull, Madie McCallister, and Taylor Roberts.
  • ...to the SGA, who will serve as the District Vice President next year. Kudos to Ashton Sigler, who will represent the district at the state conference talent show.
  • ...to the Culinary Academy who won 3rd out of 11 teams at the Daytona State Pro-Start Competition.
  • ...to Breanna Mazza who won the Writes of Spring 2013. Her entry was one of 120 winners from 2,000 entries. The 120 winning entries  will be compiled create a fully staged production at the Orlando Repertory Theatre in April. 
  • ...to the following art students whose art work was selected for the North East Florida Scholastic Art Awards Show in Jacksonville. The art work will be on display at the Jacksonville Downtown Public Library from January 26th until February 24th. The students were awarded a Gold Key (GK), Silver Key (SK) or Honorable Mentions (HM). The students are William Clark (SK), Beverly DeMarco (HM), Shelbie Donnelly (SK), Amber Evans (SK & HM), Matthew Green (HM), Alexis Harris (GK), Kailtin Harvey (HM), Sydney McNamee (SK), Kimberlyn Murphy (GK & HM), Edwin Narvarro (GK), Shanleigh O'Dell (GK & SK), Alexandra Scholle (HM), Samantha Sciarappa (HM), Sierra Selman (HM), Sarah Siefkas (HM), Miarriah Soldevilla (GK & HM), Jazmine Sundquist (GK & SK), Brittany Thomas (GK & SK), and Alexis Wright (HM).

  • ...to Stephanie DeAbreu, Amber Evans, Sarah Gilford, Kaleigh Harrison, Dakota Malphurs, Hannah May, Brianna Sanders, Marriah Soldevilla, Jazmine Sundquist, Isabel Trotta, Sofia Trotta, and Emily Wolcott for having their art portfolio selected to go the Florida State Fair. Amber Evans also won a scholarship.
  • ...Lindsey Narbeth, for Vintage, at 50th Halifax Art Festival. She received an Award of Excellence.
  • …to the members or soon-to-be-members of Troupe 1903 of the International Thespian Society attended the District 3 Thespian Festival and Performance Assessment.  The students are Shawn Auborn, Leah Johnston, Cheyenne Drews, Ysa Fernandez, Madison Tuck, Leigh Raymond, Cassia Padgitt, Taylor Howard, Alesha Arnold, Dorothy Martin, Haley Gavagni , Brian Dunn, Ashley Johnson, Zack McCormick, Ryan Conn, Ayren Alexander, Ashley Faulds, Stephanie DeAbreu, Jason Wills, Keyron Williamson, Zephyr Lenninger, Matt Green, Brendan Chambers, Meghan Kelly, Kaylyn Cast, Brendan Chambers, Robert Wood, Audrey Sugg, Nelson Conroy, Megan Lessig, and Nelson Conroy. The troupe garnered more Superior ratings than ever before and we will have a large group attending the state conference in March.  This is also the first year that every single student who performed in an individual event qualified to attend State.  And, it is the first year that freshmen will be performing at State.  Freshman, Brendan Chambers, also won the All Star Cast award.   • ...to Ms. Colby, Ms. Curry and Ms. Phillips, who have artwork on display at the Volusia Art Educators' Exhibit 2012. The display will be from September 14th through October 12, 2012 at the ArtHaus (3840 Ridgewood Avenue, Port Orange).
