COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTS
ACT (www.actstudent.org)- The ACT is not an aptitude or an IQ test. Instead, the questions on the ACT are directly related to what you have learned in your high school courses in English, mathematics, reading, and science. Because the ACT tests are based on what is taught in the high school curriculum, students are generally more comfortable with the ACT than they are with traditional aptitude tests or tests with narrower content.
NOTE: ACT Writing is a requirement for admissions into the State University System in Florida.
College Readiness Benchmark Scores – A benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses, which include English Composition, Algebra, Social Science and Biology. These scores were empirically derived based on the actual performance of students in college. The College Readiness Benchmark Scores are:
College Course/Course Area ACT Test Benchmark Score
English Composition English 18
Algebra Mathematics 22
Social Sciences Reading 21
Biology Science 24
SAT (www.collegeboard.com) - The SAT is the nation's most widely used admissions test among colleges and universities. It tests students' knowledge of subjects that are necessary for college success: reading, writing, and mathematics. The SAT assesses the critical thinking skills students need for academic success in college skills that students learned in high school.
P.E.R.T. - The purpose of Florida’s Post-secondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) is to adequately assess students' academic skills in mathematics, reading and writing through the delivery of three assessments, one for each of these areas. The results of these assessments are used to determine students' placement into appropriate courses at their college. The PERT is used to determine eligibility for Dual Enrollment Courses.
